Healthy forests maintain, fertilize, and renew themselves, naturally. Wouldn’t you like to grow an abundant food-producing ecosystem like this in your back yard? You can! Edible forest gardens mimic the structure and function of natural forests through all their stages of development and grow food, fuel, fiber, fodder, fertilizers, farmaceuticals, and fun. We can meet our own needs and regenerate healthy ecosystems at the same time! This talk introduces the vision of forest gardening with some scientific background, a few living examples, and a sampling of some useful perennial edibles you can use in your own garden. Suggested donation $10. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Ecological gardening attempts to mimic the structure and function of natural ecosystems in food-producing ecosystems. This workshop explores the vision, theory, design, and practice of ecosystem agriculture using the temperate deciduous forest ecosystem as the model. Lectures and experiential class will reveal the nature of ecosystem architecture, social structure, underground economics, and succession. Participants will draw conclusions from these experiences, developing practical design principles, practices, patterns, and processes for garden design and management. This is a workshop for gardeners, designers, and students of gardening, ecology, and design.
Early Bird (Before Dec. 6th) $100
After Dec. 6th: $125
Workshop Kit: $185, includes Workshop, PRI Cold Climate membership, and Introduction to Permaculture by Bill Mollison

How can humanity gracefully and ethically descend from the dangerous peak of energy and resource use upon which we find ourselves? This one-day intensive provides design professionals an opportunity to explore permaculture’s answers to this question so you can offer ecological design solutions to your clients. We will review core principles through case studies, and burrow into soil ecology and self renewing fertility. We’ll take plant communities apart and learn how to put them together in effective perennial polycultures. And we’ll explore ways to optimize establishment and minimize maintenance by design. As always, we’ll work to mimic ecosystem structure and function in our landscapes so we can gain the benefits natural systems demonstrate: stability, resilience, self-maintenance, self-renewal, increased soil quality, nutrient conservation, and more. If we designed our whole culture this way, what might it look like? Come get a glimpse of humanity’s possible future!

Bring Your Own Lunch!

Join expert mycologist and visionary biologist Paul Stamets and edible forest garden expert Dave Jacke for an in depth look at gardening for the future.  Paul Stamets will discuss revolutionary ways to garden using fungi to promote and maintain a fertile soil.  Examine practical techniques using fungi, the grand decomposers, to replace chemical insecticides and enhance sustainability.  Dave Jacke will explain how to combine plants in woodland-like patterns that are both beautiful and productive.  Consider growing fruits, must, vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms in ways that mimic natural forest ecosystems, creating a diverse, high-yield system that is largely self-maintaining.

Given that events make the best teachers, it follows that our role as educators is to design learning events.  In this course, we will explore how to create events that teach permaculture, applying ecological principles and processes to the design of permaculture workshops, courses, and other experiences.  Learn how to create effective learning environments based on quick assessments of students and their learning modalities, eight intelligences, and other niche characteristics.  Each student in this course will design and run short classes and exercises, speak in public, plan and budget for an event, and coteach a one day permaculture workshop at course end.  What do whole learning systems look, feel and sound like?  Come find out!  The best way to learn is to do, and to have fun doing it!  Join us!  Limited to 25 certified permaculture design course graduates; pre-course preparation required.
